Be safe. Be compliant.
Since 2003, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been investigating a greater number of automotive repair businesses for safety violations, in response to complaints from employees upset about unsafe conditions. Between January 2003 and January 2005, OSHA inspectors randomly checked more than 800 general repair shops, 1,300 body and paint shops, and 400 dealership service departments. One of the violations inspectors are looking for is unprotected floor openings, which must be guarded or covered when not in use, according to OSHA fall protection regulations. Penalties for violations can range up to $70,000.
