The construction industry is one of the most hazardous business sectors in the United States: A whopping 1 out of 10 construction workers is injured every year. What poses the greatest risk? Fall hazards. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that falls are the single leading cause of accidents and fatalities in the construction industry. Here are some sobering fall facts and figures:

• According to a 2005 report by NIOSH (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health), the construction industry suffered 1,224 fatal work injuries in 2004—the most job-related fatalities of any industry sector.

• Fatal job-related injuries involving falls in 2004 represented the highest annual total of fall fatalities ever reported in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. This increase was led by a 39 percent rise in the number of workers who were fatally injured after a fall from a roof, and 88 percent of the fatal falls from roofs involved construction workers.

• Spurred by rising incidents of job-related falls, many states are getting tougher on construction employers, insisting that companies provide protection for employees exposed to fall hazards. In one of these states, Michigan, only about 4 percent of the workforce is employed in construction—but construction fatalities account for more than 40 percent of fatal workplace accidents!

When a worker is seriously injured, or worse, your company not only loses a good employee—its risks losing its reputation and gaining higher insurance premiums.
